    Spirituality at St Issey

At St Issey C of E Primary School, spirituality is an important part of who we are and how we help children grow.

We describe spirituality as “the feeling of awe and wonder that we get when we make connections to the wider world as we nurture ourselves and the environment. It is the freedom to ask and seek the truth and meaning behind ‘big’ questions so that we can reflect on something greater than ourselves.”

We talk about spirituality with the children in three ways:

    • IN – exploring their sense of self, who they are and what makes them unique and special.
    • OUT – reflecting on their experiences, noticing the awe and wonder around them, and making connections with others and the wider world.
    • UP – putting their beliefs into action and showing the impact that faith in God, or something greater than themselves, has on their lives.

Spiritual development is woven through everything we do — from our curriculum and collective worship to how we interact with one another. We encourage children to ask questions, to think deeply, and to reflect on the bigger picture as they grow into thoughtful, compassionate individuals.

Our Christian vision — “Be strong and courageous” — underpins this work. It reminds children that exploring faith, meaning and purpose takes courage, and that by understanding themselves, connecting with others and reaching beyond themselves, they can live with strength, hope and purpose in the world.

We believe that spirituality belongs to everyone. At St Issey, children of all faiths and none are supported to explore big questions, express their beliefs and values, and make sense of the world in a way that is meaningful to them.
