Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

At St Issey C of E Primary School, we are committed to helping every child be strong and courageous and achieve their potential. We welcome all children into our school and work hard to make sure every pupil feels included, supported and valued.

We recognise that some children may find aspects of learning more challenging. Our SEND provision is designed to remove barriers, build on children’s strengths and provide the right level of support at the right time. Support is tailored to individual needs and can change as those needs change.

How We Support Children
  • Inclusive classrooms: All classes are fully inclusive, with high-quality teaching and strategies that benefit every child.
  • Targeted and personalised support: Some children may receive small adaptations, small-group support, or personalised plans (IEPs) to help them make progress.
  • Graduated approach: We follow the Assess, Plan, Do, Review process to plan and monitor support. A small number of children may require an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), which sets out more detailed support.
  • Working with families: We know that parents know their children best. We work closely with you to understand your child’s needs, set shared targets and review progress together.
  • Collaboration with professionals: Where needed, we work with specialists such as speech and language therapists or educational psychologists to support your child’s development.

Our aim is for all children with SEND to become confident, independent learners who feel part of our school community, develop resilience and thrive socially and academically.

Types of Need We Support

We support children with a wide range of special educational needs. These are grouped into four broad areas:

  1. Communication and Interaction – for example, speech and language difficulties or autism spectrum condition.
  2. Cognition and Learning – including specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, as well as more general learning delays.
  3. Social, Emotional and Mental Health – such as anxiety, ADHD or difficulties with emotional regulation.
  4. Sensory and/or Physical Needs – including visual or hearing impairments and physical disabilities that affect access to learning.
