Core Curriculum – Building Strong Foundations

At St Issey, we give children a strong grounding in reading, writing, maths, science and RE. We plan carefully so that skills and knowledge build steadily as they move through the school. Our mixed-age classes follow rolling programmes that keep learning fresh and make sure nothing is repeated or missed.

We teach writing through storytelling, using drama, visits, film and digital tools to spark ideas and give children a real purpose for their work. Reading is carefully planned too, with texts chosen to stretch vocabulary and deepen understanding.

Our curriculum is flexible and responds to the children we teach. It changes with the seasons, the Christian calendar and the interests of our pupils. We believe children learn best when they experience things first-hand, so we bring lessons to life through real-world contexts and meaningful outcomes.
